John A. Thayer’s training in the field of Luthiery began through self-taught experience. John created several electric guitars between the ages of 16 and 18. John attended the Roberto Venn School of Luthiery in Phoenix, Arizona. During that time he created two electric and two acoustic guitars. John spent additional time at Roberto Venn as an assistant to Robert Mazzullo, one of the past instructors at the school. As an assistant he continued his education through hands on experience by building additional acoustic guitars and completing a variety of repairs on many stringed musical instruments. John went on to work under the guidance of the world-renowned master luthier, Ervin Somogyi in Oakland, California. Ervin instructed John in the art of soundboard voicing and French polish, among other things. Since returning to Bremerton, Washington, John has created a business around guitar building and stringed instrument repair. He is theGuitar-tec./Luthier for Washington Academe of Music, and DJ’s Music in Port Orchard. John is also a member of The Guild of American Luthiers, a nationally known organization among stringed instrument builders and enthusiasts.
